Esk Valley, Hawkes Bay
Syrah 2007
This wine is a blend of fruit grown on stony Hawkes Bay vineyard sites. The vines are trained on a VSP trellis and intensively managed, employing shoot thinning, leaf plucking and bunch thinning to produce high quality fruit. Hand harvesting ensures only clean and ripe fruit is harvested.
WINEMAKING
The fruit for this wine was hand harvested and fermented in stainless steel and concrete open topped fermenters. The de-stemmed fruit was fermented with both cultured and indigenous yeasts and macerated on skins at the completion of fermentation. The wine was then transferred to barrel for malolactic fermentation and subsequent ageing. After 18 months in barrel the wine was fined with egg whites and bottled in March 2009.
WINEMAKER'S COMMENT
This is a very ‘varietal’ wine, displaying classic Hawkes Bay Syrah notes of plums, blackberries, pepper and exotic spice notes with subtle oak integration. It is a medium bodied and food friendly style with excellent ageing potential.
