This wine is an individual barrel selection of two dry farmed northern Hawkes Bay vineyards. Sited on what was the old tidal estuary of the Esk River before the 1931 earthquake and planted in 2001 with Burgundy clone 95, the Howards Vineyard produces powerful wine with noticeable peach flavours. Our home block here at Esk Valley produces elegant wine with more acidity and grapefruit/ lime characteristics.
Both vineyards are intensively managed with low yields to maximize the quality of fruit from the site. Shoot thinning, bunch thinning, leaf plucking and hand picking are all employed.
The individual vineyard parcels were hand harvested and whole cluster pressed. Only low juice yields were taken. The unsettled juice was run off to barrel for fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Some barrels were allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation to naturally soften the acidity. The finished wine was left on lees till bottling with occasional lees stirring. The final blend was a barrel selection of 70% from the Howard Vineyard and 30% Esk Valley home block.
This is an elegant, complex and creamy textured Chardonnay which displays vineyard derived complexity and flavours of peach, grapefruit and cashew. Naturally made with a ‘hands off’ approach it is both food friendly and age worthy and vividly exhibits the complexity of Bay View Chardonnay. Further interest is added with subtle oak and lees developing complexity from barrel ageing.
Enjoy with rich seafood dishes especially crayfish.
