Winemakers Reserve Chardonnay

This wine is an individual barrel selection of three Hawkes Bay vineyards: Brian Howard’s dry farmed vineyard in Bay View sited on what was the old tidal estuary of the Esk River before the 1931 earthquake, the Davies Vineyard on the stony soils of Ohiti Road on the western bank of the Ngaruroro River and the Keltern Vineyard further upstream and on the opposite bank of the Ngaruroro. Each vineyard brings its own characteristics to the finished wine.

The individual vineyard parcels were hand harvested and whole cluster pressed. Only low juice yields were taken. The unsettled juice was run off to barrel for fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Once dry the wine was put through malolactic fermentation to naturally soften the acidity. The finished wines were left on lees before being carefully blended, and finally bottled.

This is a full bodied Chardonnay that displays vineyard-derived complexity and elegance. Naturally made with a 'hands off' approach it is food friendly and age worthy. It vividly exhibits the peach notes of Bay View Chardonnay with the more crisp mineral characters of the Maraekakaho and Ohiti Road stony soils. Subtle oak and lees derived complexity from barrel ageing add further interest.

Enjoy with rich seafood dishes especially crayfish.

Delicious now or cellar for five + years.
